Physicians and Providers

Strong4Life

Research shows that physicians are the leading voice parents turn to for advice about their child’s wellness and obesity-related issues. Children’s is counting on physicians to continue to be the key influencer of children and their parents so they can lead happy, healthy lives. As part of Strong4Life, Children’s physicians developed a program designed to help providers initiate conversations about BMI measurement, nutrition and physical activity behaviors with patients and families.

Why are providers across the state participating in Strong4Life?

  • The program offers training to providers to help them learn how to have the right conversation with their patients and families. Providers will also receive continuing medical education (CME) credits for their participation.
  • Providers receive a useful toolkit of resources such as BMI posters, health assessment forms, prescription pads and more.
  • Over 95 percent satisfaction rate among current providers in the program.

Our evidence-based training and toolkit offer providers a proactive framework for their patients to enable sustainable behavior changes that promote a healthy lifestyle. Recognizing that providers can be restricted by time limitations, the counseling techniques we’ve designed can easily be incorporated into short well child visits.

We are uniquely positioned to educate, engage and support the provider community. This multi-faceted approach equips providers with the necessary tools and resources to educate and influence patients/families to choose healthy lifestyles, and prevent and reduce childhood obesity:

1.  Train on patient-centered counseling practices
We will train providers to incorporate patient centered counseling techniques in well-child visits. This approach will empower families, promote responsible discussions about lifestyle choices, and offer a framework for addressing childhood obesity issues.

2.  Provide tools and resources
We created a toolkit that supports the conversation healthcare providers have with families. It promotes screening, generates awareness for BMI measurement, assesses family motivation to change, and provides guidance to families incorporating healthy choices into their lives. The toolkit and resources will be distributed directly to providers after training has been completed.

3.  Provide continuing education
Children’s will offer a variety of continuing medical education opportunities such as dinners, grand rounds presentations, and the Children’s New Horizons Conference, that focuses on child wellness.
