Manometry

Manometry is a test often performed to determine the cause of anorectal constipation or encopresis (stool leakage). A pressure-sensitive, balloon-tipped catheter is inserted into the rectum and pressure readings are recorded to examine how the rectal muscles and nerves are working.

Anorectal manometry is also helpful in evaluating anus and rectum malformations and Hirschsprung's disease, among other problems.
