Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta performs more pediatric brain tumor surgeries than any other hospital in Georgia.* In 2010, Children’s performed 100 brain tumor surgeries.
The addition of an intra-operative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) system allows Children’s to join the ranks of the world’s most technologically advanced hospitals. Children’s was among the first pediatric hospitals in the world to implement the high-field strength iMRI technology.

informational video of the iMRI. The iMRI technology is specially designed for use in neurosurgery operating rooms and produces high-quality images, allowing surgeons to:
- Better identify tumors and lesions
- Determine the size and shape of a brain tumor
- Draw a distinction between a tumor and healthy tissue
- Perform surgeries that previously could not be performed
The iMRI helps the patient’s chance for a better outcome with the potential to reduce the need for other treatments (such as chemotherapy) and additional surgeries.
A study conducted by the University of Minnesota shows that by using an iMRI, neurosurgeons are able to find and remove more of the tumor in 25 percent to 30 percent of cases.

The Aflac Cancer Center treats more than 300 new cancer patients each year and is recognized as one of the top five childhood cancer centers in the country by Parents magazine.
