Interventional Radiology Safety

Female Child

Reduced dose to patients also reduces dose to health care personnel. In pediatric interventional radiology (IR), the goals are to complete the procedure as safely and effectively as possible while minimizing dose to patients and as well as to the pediatric IR team.

The IR team at Children’s follows Image Gently recommendations and implements the following safety measures:

  • Special pediatric protocols based on patient size reduce radiation exposure
  • Ultrasound used instead of fluoroscopy whenever possible
  • Live fluoroscopic time is reduced by using pulsed fluoroscopy and other techniques
  • Lead shielding and beam limitation are used to reduce the amount of radiation to other body parts
