Throughout his training, Dr. Murphy has remained active in research and leadership. In 2013, he was named as an Emerging Leader for the American Orthopaedic Association. He has worked to assist in developing the Appropriate Use Criteria for the management of pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures and the management of supracondylar humerus fractures involving vascular injury. Dr. Murphy is also involved in various leadership roles within the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and Scoliosis Research Society.

Dr. Murphy remains active in orthopaedic research and is involved with multi-center research groups such as the Children's Spine Study Group and the Children’s Orthopaedic and Trauma Infection Consortium for Evidence Based Study.

In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He also remains active by mountain biking, cycling, alpine skiing, surfing and traveling.
