Who teaches the children?
Our hospital teachers are highly qualified, Georgia-certified educators with previous classroom experience. They are trained in a variety of areas—elementary, middle and high school, as well as special education—and can help you work with your child's school so that he doesn’t fall behind.
Teacher assistance includes:
- Coordinating assignments with your child's teacher(s).
- Providing instruction.
- Sending progress notes to your child's school to show attendance and assignment completion.
- Providing information about support and resources available at your child's school, including assistance through a Section 504 Plan or Individualized Education Plan.
- Providing information to your child's school about how his illness may impact his learning.
- Making referrals for home instruction if your child's doctor says he’s too sick to go back to school for a period of time.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital and Scottish Rite Hospital each have a classroom with state-approved textbooks, computers and other learning tools. At Children's Hughes Spalding Hospital, school instruction takes place in the outpatient clinics, patient rooms or Family Library.
- Classrooms are staffed with teachers and volunteers.
- Bedside instruction may be available to patients who need to remain in their hospital room.
- Each classroom has computers and children can access online textbooks.
- Parents should bring their child’s assignments and books to the hospital if possible. Teachers can also contact schools to get homework.
- Your child’s school will receive a progress report and attendance note so that he will receive credit for work completed during his stay.
Locations
- The Arthur M. Blank Hospital classroom is located on the fifth floor of the bridge.
- The Scottish Rite Hospital classroom is on the first floor near the Family Amenities Suite.
- At Hughes Spalding, children are taught in the outpatient clinics, patient rooms or Family Library.

Hospital homebound (HHB) services are designed to provide continuity of educational services between the classroom and home or hospital for students in Georgia public schools whose medical needs, either physical or psychiatric, do not allow them to attend school for a limited period of time.
- HHB instruction may be used to supplement the classroom program for students with health impairments and whose conditions may interfere with regular school attendance (e.g., students receiving dialysis or radiation/chemotherapy, or students with other serious health conditions).
- Students must be enrolled in a public school in Georgia in order to receive HHB services.
- HHB services are not intended to supplant regular school services and are, by design, temporary.
- A student must anticipate being absent from school for a minimum of 10 consecutive or intermittent school days due to a medical or psychiatric condition.
- A student’s inability to attend school for medical or psychiatric reasons must be certified by the licensed physician or licensed psychiatrist who is currently treating your child for the diagnosis presented.
- HHB instruction with a certified teacher can count for attendance credit for the student:
- 36 minutes = 1 school day
- 3 hours = 5 school days
Our hospital teachers at all campuses are available to help hospitalized patients with completion of the forms that are necessary for HHB services.
