Since 1995, Aflac’s support has helped make the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta one of the leading childhood cancer, hematology, and blood and marrow transplant (BMT) programs in the country.
To date, the insurance provider and its Aflac Field Force have contributed more than $60 million to the Aflac Cancer Center, making the company the largest corporate supporter of Children’s. The Aflac Field Force is comprised of independent sales associates of Aflac.
"Thanks to Aflac’s generous support, the Aflac Cancer Center has the resources to offer patients and their families a team of specialized pediatric caregivers who have an emphasis on high-quality care and dedicated research. We are able to provide a source of strength and create a place of hope for children," said William G. Woods, M.D., Director for the Aflac Cancer Center.
Aflac’s employees, executives and sales associates have embraced the Aflac Cancer Center as the company’s largest community philanthropy. In addition to the company’s donations, the Aflac Field Force passionately supports patients and their families by making individual contributions. Aflac corporate employees also volunteer their time to play bingo with hospitalized patients.
Aflac’s financial contributions have been used to fund the following critical needs:
- New inpatient and outpatient facilities at both Children’s at Egleston and Children’s at Scottish Rite
- New state-of-the-art pediatric research building
- Endowments for the family support team and hematology/oncology Fellowship Program, endowed chairs for the chief medical officer and leaders in innovative therapy, cancer survivorship and sickle cell disease
- Endowment supporting clinical and basic research program development
Coupling both corporate and Aflac Field Force support, the Aflac Cancer Center has become an amazing center of hope and healing for children in Georgia and throughout the nation. Aflac has set the standard for a true philanthropic partnership by which all others should be measured. Children’s thanks Aflac for their continued support in the fight against childhood cancer and blood disorders.
The following special events and programs are sponsored by Aflac and benefit the Aflac Cancer Center and its patients.
- Aflac Cancer Center bingo
One Saturday a month, Aflac employee volunteers visit the Aflac Cancer Center and play bingo with the patients.
- Braves Night
In an annual tradition that began in 1995, more than 100 patients, family members and medical staff from the Aflac Cancer Center enjoy a pre-game party where patients and their families meet Atlanta Braves players, get autographs and watch a game.
