Pediatric Neurogastroenterology and Motility Program

Caring for Pediatric Disorders of the Gastrointestinal System

Our team is made up of highly qualified professionals who will create a highly specialized treatment plan for your child. After visiting with you and your child in clinic, we may perform various tests to diagnose motility issues.

What is a Motility Disorder?

Motility disorders are conditions associated with the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and anus/rectum. In a healthy child, wave-like contractions called peristalsis move food through the intestinal tract.

These contractions also help the body absorb nutrients. Peristaltic contractions happen when the muscles and nerves of the digestive tract work together.

Problems with the function of the muscles or nerves of your digestive tract can cause a variety of motility issues for a child, including:

  • Abdominal pain or distension (bloating)
  • Aspirating (inhaling liquid into the lungs)
  • Chest pain
  • Choking
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Gagging
  • Incontinence or soiling
  • Regurgitation (bringing undigested food up from the stomach to the mouth)
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss

Your Child's Visit

  • Scheduling, Appointments and Forms

Your child will need to be referred to our clinic from a gastrointestinal specialist, surgeon, pain specialist or psychiatrist who believes further motility diagnostics are appropriate.

  • What to Bring

You will be contacted by a member of our team prior to seeing us in clinic. In addition to reviewing your child's medical records, we will want to speak with you about your child's medical history.

All you need to bring is your insurance information and any new documents related to your child's medical health that we have not yet received.

  • Location
  • Insurance

It is important to let us know of any changes with your insurance. We will need your most up-to-date information to get approval for medications and/or procedures.

It is your responsibility to know what is covered by your insurance policy. We will try to get all necessary approvals from your insurance company before your child's procedure.

  • Physician Referrals

Please call 404-785-8596 or send a fax to 404-785-5845 to make a referral. We will need the following information before we can see your child:

      - All relevant clinical notes from your office.

      - A CD of all relevant images and studies performed on this child.

      - Consultive notes that will enhance the child's visit.

We will take this data and go through an intensive chart review prior to seeing your child to ensure we provide the most efficient visit possible. We may ask your patient to go through additional testing before being seen in clinic.

Download the referral form and fax to 404-785-5845.
