Scoliosis Screening Program for Adolescents

Recognition and Education are the First Steps
in Understanding an Overlooked Condition

Our Scoliosis Screening Program has provided education and care for adolescents and their families for more than 20 years. We have specialty clinics at our five Urgent Care Centers for adolescents who have a positive screening in school or at their doctor’s office. Coordinated by a registered nurse, the clinics:

  • Give the family information based on the patient’s signs of scoliosis. 
  • Provide an X-ray if needed. 
  • Give the family and their doctor results and advice on the same day the patient is seen in the clinic.

We also offer an annual conference on scoliosis in the fall for healthcare professionals. Register today. It focuses on:

    Mary Lou OliverMary Lou Oliver, Senior Program Coordinator for our Scoliosis Screening Program, received the 2012 March Of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award for Pediatrics. 

    In her role, Oliver has worked extensively to educate patients and doctors about the importance of scoliosis screening. She has also expanded the program to include additional clinic sites for more convenient access for our patients.

The Children's Scoliosis Screening Program provides annual screening for students, and tertiary screening to children who have been identified as having positive scoliosis screens. The program also gives annual training to nurses, volunteers, teachers and other school health workers.

Scoliosis is a crooked spine. It's name comes from the Greek word meaning "crooked". As the spine grows, it can bend to the side. At the same time, the vertebrae in the spine may twist or rotate, causing additional issues in the body. Learn more in this video.
