Specialists Help Kids and Teens Avoid and Recover From Injury
Although they move smoothly through the water, swimmers are just as prone to injury as any contact-sport athlete. Our swimming program helps swimmers recover from injuries and get back into competition.  We also teach them how to avoid injuries and how to improve their performance.

    Chronic shoulder pain slowed, and nearly stopped, Nathaniel McBurney's promising swimming career. After months of physical therapy with the guidance of a Children's physical therapist, Nathaniel is back in the water and swimming faster than ever.
  • Swimmers most commonly see injuries in four areas:

    • Shoulders—Common injuries include tendonitis of the rotator cuff and shoulder impingement.
    • Knees—The most common knee injury for swimmers is Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS), especially for those who specialize in the breaststroke.
    • Back—Lower back pain is common because of improper use of their core muscles, poor mechanics and bad posture.
    • Overuse—As a swimmer progresses, he may have to swim harder to adjust to longer yardage. This can lead to overuse injuries.

    Swimmers also often experience pain during growth spurts and injuries out of the water during dry-land training. Our swimming experts know how to treat all of these issues and prepare swimmers for any kind of season, summer or year-round.

Our Services and Expertise

With the help of Olympic-caliber swimming experts, our program meets the needs of young swimmers trying to shed precious seconds from their time. 
  • Skippy Mattson, P.T., A.T.C., was the lead trainer for metro Atlanta swimmers competing on the 2012 Olympic team, and has held several U.S. records. Since she is still a swimmer herself, she can relate to other swimmers and the difficulties they face. 
  • Designed by Skippy, we have dry-land stretching programs, group and individualized, that help improve performance in the pool. 
  • Our network of doctors and therapists gives swimmers access to the specialists they need for the variety of issues they can have. We provide the proper care they need when they need it. 
  • Our physical therapists will work with coaches to help reinforce recommendations. 
  • Diane King, M.S., R.D., A.T.C. works closely with swimmers, and is also a registered dietician. She can teach swimmers what kind of nutrition their bodies need to get the best performance. 
  • Using video technology, our physical therapists can analyze a swimmer’s stroke to get more out of each movement. 
  • We offer injury screenings in which we assess kids’ technique and help coaches develop dry-land programs to include flexibility, strengthening and stretching exercises. 
Skippy, Diane and other members of the team also attend coaches’ clinics and local swim meets to help with stretching techniques, meet with parents and discuss nutrition.
