Laser Treatment of Hemangiomas

Hemangiomas are benign tumors that may vary from small strawberry-colored marks to large disfiguring growths. While some involution can be expected, hemangiomas often require treatment for functional and aesthetic problems.

The Children’s Center for Craniofacial Disorders team uses a combination of laser treatments for hemangiomas. This includes the Candela and Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (KTP) lasers, which often produce more gratifying results when used in conjunction with one another. Lasers selectively damage the vessels in the hemangioma without damaging the overlying skin. Very few centers in the nation use laser technology to treat these marks, which are the most common of noncancerous skin tumors.
