MRI: 3 Tesla Magnet

Children’s is the only hospital system in metro Atlanta that has both 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and sedation services just for children.

What does 3 Tesla mean?

Our pediatric MRI uses a large magnet, radio waves and computers to take pictures of your child’s body. A Tesla is a unit of measurement for magnets, just like how an inch is a measurement of distance. Our 3 Tesla MRIs have a powerful 3 Tesla magnet.

What is the benefit of the 3 Tesla magnet?

It is two times to five times stronger than a standard MRI, which is usually between 0.6 Tesla and 1.5 Tesla. That means we can take better, clearer pictures of the smallest parts of your child’s body. Our doctors use these pictures to diagnose and treat your child.

Why is the 3 Tesla MRI is used?

The 3 Tesla MRI is particularly useful for diagnosing:

  • Sports injuries, such as tears, strains and other orthopaedic issues
  • Neurological conditions, such as epilepsy, vascular malformations and brain tumors
  • Other types of cancer
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

When your child has an MRI he needs to stay still for a several minutes, or even hours, so the machine can get a clear image. This may be difficult for children who are very young or do not like tight spaces.  To help with this, our team offers sedation (relaxing medicine).
