Inherited diseases pass from parents to a child through genes—a part of DNA that affects how a person grows and develops. Sibley Heart Center Cardiology Cardiac Genetics Program cares for children and young adults with genetic heart syndromes and diseases. We care for patients with:
- A diagnosis of, or who are suspected of having, a genetic heart disease, including Long QT syndrome, dilated cardiomyopathy and coronary artery disease
- Family history of heart disease or congenital (at birth) heart defects
- Sudden cardiac death of a family member younger than age of 50
Services
At counseling sessions, we will collect a family and medical history. We will also discuss the benefits of genetic testing. The goal is to help your family understand:
- Your child’s diagnosis, the course of his disorder and ways to manage it
- Hereditary factors
- The risk of other family members having the same condition
- Possible treatment options
