About Asthma

Make Sure You Have an Asthma Action Plan

Asthma is a condition that affects the airways. Airways are tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. In a person with asthma, these tubes react to triggers causing:

  • The airways to swell
  • Thick, sticky mucus fills the airways
  • The muscles that wrap around the airways squeeze tight

Asthma Action Plan

An asthma action plan is created by you and your child’s doctor. It includes:

If your child does not have an asthma action plan, talk to his doctor about getting one. A copy of your child’s asthma action plan should be with your child’s school, day care center, babysitter, coach, grandparent and anyone else that helps take care of your child. It will help them understand how to recognize and handle an asthma attack.

Download, print and fill out the asthma action plan for younger children (En Español) and older children (En Español).
