With new software, called ASiR, used for our computed tomography (CT) scans, we reduced radiation by up to 50 percent for some types of scans.
What does this data mean?
Using a combination of protocols and technology, we reduced radiation exposure by up to 50 percent for abdominal/pelvis CT scans and 30 percent for head CT scans, compared to the dose given to pediatric patients at an adult facility.
Why is dose reduction important?
At adult facilities, sometimes a child can get an image with as much radiation as an adult needs. Children need scans based on their size. The more radiation used in a scan makes it clearer, but radiation can be dangerous to children’s growing bodies. Radiologists at Children’s have years of experience reading low-dose scans, making imaging safer for children.
