Meet Jacob

Jacob
2012 Care-a-Thon patient profile

Jacob’s life has not been without challenges, but with the help of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and his family’s positive attitude, Jacob is overcoming obstacles every day.

Born with Down syndrome and a heart defect, Jacob underwent his first open heart surgery at the Children’s Sibley Heart Center when he was just seven weeks old. Since then, he has undergone more than 100 surgeries.

On November 13, 2009, Jacob's family learned he had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). His family was devastated but knew he was in good hands. To battle his illness, Jacob needed to go through three and a half years of daily chemotherapy pills, chemotherapy through his iv-port once a month and spinal taps every three months in the hospital.

The now 11-year-old still has more than a year of chemotherapy and other treatments to endure, but his family is grateful for the care he has received. They are overwhelmed by the amount of love, support and prayers they have received at the Aflac Cancer Center. This includes everyone from the techs who take blood, the music therapists who help make the hospital fun, the nurses who go out of their way to show Jacob love and the amazing doctors who make sure our child receives the best care.
