  • This study is to evaluate the clinical outcomes of a physeal-sparing technique using the illotibial band for combined intra-articular and extra-articular ACL reconstruction. At a mean 3-year follow-up, the study findings confirmed excellent functional outcomes, a low ACL revision rate, and no growth disturbances.

  • This study is a long-term clinical follow-up study of patients with isolated lesser tuberosity avulsions in skeletally immature patients. Operative treatment consisted of a diagnostic arthroscopy to evaluate for concomitant pathology, followed by an open reattachment of the tuberosity through an incision in line with the anterior axillary fold.

The BrAIST study is a Phase III, multicenter, prospective partially-randomized, partially blinded clinical trial, designed to determine whether the use of the thoracolumbosacral orthoses (brace) lowers the risk of curve progression in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) relative to observation (watchful waiting).

Cancer and Blood Disorders

Ben Watkins, MD, Assistant Professor at Emory University, has earned an NIH K23 grant for his work with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT), which is an effective treatment for hematological malignancy. However, significant complications limit its widespread application. Chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is the leading cause of long-term morbidity and mortality following HCT, and recent advances have failed to reduce the frequency or severity of this devastating complication. The mechanisms of the development and evolution of chronic GVHD have not been clearly defined, thus challenging progress in the design of new therapeutic approaches aimed at preventing or treating the disease. Flow cytometry and gene expression profiling have emerged as valuable tools to interrogate complex disease states and define the molecular changes that occur during the development of disease.

The long-term approach of this work is to identify the mechanistic drivers of chronic GVHD to aid in our understanding of the disease and help elucidate targetable pathways to alter its natural history. To identify the mechanisms driving GVHD, we have developed a systems biology approach that combines longitudinal flow cytometry with gene expression analysis linked to detailed clinical data. Utilizing data from an ongoing multi-center clinical trial investigating GVHD, we will apply supervised and unsupervised approaches to determine the molecular signature of T and B cells linked to the development and evolution of chronic GVHD.
