Your Support Helps Us Stay 100% Dedicated to Kids

From our nationally ranked pediatric cancer care to our more than a century-long history, here are 10 things that you might not know about Children's.

  1. We are a not-for-profit organization
As a not-for-profit organization we are dependent upon the philanthropic generosity of our community to support our mission. Everything we do is directed toward helping children, and we’re preparing to meet the growing needs of kids in our region—not just today, but years into the future.

  2. We provide access to care for more kids in Georgia
In 2021, Children's provided $153 million in unreimbursed clinical care. While the delivery of unreimbursed care is one way that we meet our community’s needs, we also offer extensive programs and subsidized health services to augment care and improve the health of Georgia's children.

  3. We have been 100% dedicated to kids and teens for more than a century
Children's is a trusted leader in caring for kids. As the only freestanding pediatric healthcare system in Georgia, we manage nearly 1 million patient visits annually.

  4. Our Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is the No. 7 Pediatric Cancer program in the U.S.
We are also home to the country’s largest pediatric blood disorders program, including the largest pediatric sickle cell disease program in the country, offering specialized pediatric hematology expertise and treatment.

  5. We have performed 400 heart transplants and counting
Our Heart Center is consistently ranked as a top pediatric heart program by U.S. News & World Report. We are top 10 in the country for pediatric heart transplant volumes, and completed our 400th heart transplant in 2020.

  6. Our Marcus Autism Center treats more kids with autism than anywhere in the Southeast
Marcus Autism Center, a subsidiary of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is one of the largest clinical providers of autism care in the country, seeing more than 5,000 kids and teens across more than 41,000 visits in 2021.

  7. We have Georgia’s only nationally ranked orthopedics and sports medicine program for kids and teens
Unlike adult providers, our team only treats growing children and teens and we deliver care to thousands each year. In fact, our orthopedics and sports medicine team treats more broken bones for kids and teens than any other hospital in Georgia.*
*Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) by hospitals in Georgia, ages 0-18 (2020).

  8. Our Neuroscience team is performing groundbreaking surgeries to improve the lives of patients with epilepsy
In 2020, Children's performed Georgia's first awake craniotomy to minimize seizures. Performed while the patient is awake and responding to questions, this innovative procedure seeks to maximize brain function preservation while removing a tumor, with the goal of minimizing a patient's seizures and improving quality of life.

  9. We have one of the largest clinical trial programs in the country—providing hope to kids who need it most
We've been advancing pediatric research and innovation for 65 years and have made Atlanta home to the nation's top pediatric research program, in partnership with Emory University School of Medicine. We're ranked No. 1 nationally for NIH funding for pediatric departments, and have 2,089 Children's patients enrolled in clinical research and more than 400 active clinical trials.

  10. Asthma is the No. 1 reason kids are admitted to Children's
Our asthma team is specially trained to care for kids and teens who have asthma and breathing problems. In Georgia, about one in 10 children under age 18 has asthma—one of the highest rates in the nation—and it leads to more than half a million missed school days annually across the state.
