IMPORTANT UPDATES

The Infection Defense Program is dedicated to managing infectious disease concerns for children with cancer and blood disorders. Our program combines specialized expertise and comprehensive care to meet the unique needs of these patients. The program is led by Dr. Pratik Patel, one of only a handful of physicians in the country who is dual board-certified in pediatric hematology/oncology and infectious disease.

Children with cancer and blood disorders face unique challenges when it comes to infections. Often their weakened immune systems make them more susceptible to infections, which can complicate their primary illness and treatment. The complexity of their underlying primary illness and the rare nature of some of the infections necessitates a careful approach to taking care of these vulnerable patients.

Our specialized program can assist hematology/oncology clinicians in managing the following conditions and concerns:

  • Serious bacterial infections such as nocardiosis and mycobacterial infections.
  • Viral infections such as cytomegalovirus (CMV).
  • Invasive fungal infections such as candidiasis, aspergillosis and mucormycosis.
  • Counseling regarding vaccination and other preventative strategies for both immunocompromised patients and those post-completion of their cancer and blood disorders treatment.
  • Consultations pre-hematopoietic cell transplant to develop personalized infectious disease plans for care in the post-transplant period.

We collaborate with hematology/oncology colleagues to provide coordinated, personalized, longitudinal patient care. Some of the teams we work most closely with include:

Our program is designed to provide tailored care and support through the following services:

  • Comprehensive Reviews: We thoroughly review each patient’s medical history and test results to develop a clear and detailed understanding of their medical journey to date.
  • Diagnosis of Infections: We have knowledge of and recommend appropriate diagnostic methods. We craft individualized treatment and follow-up plans to ensure high quality care.
  • Education: We provide extensive education to patients and their families about their diagnosis, treatment and necessary follow-up care, empowering them with knowledge and confidence.
  • Close Communication: We maintain close communication with the patient’s primary hematology/oncology clinician, ensuring coordinated care and informed recommendations.

By focusing on these key areas, our program aims to improve outcomes and quality of life for children with cancer and blood disorders.
