Introduction

William Mahle, MD, is the Chief of Cardiology at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Heart Center and is the Marcus Professor and Division Director of Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine. His academic interests have focused on perioperative care with a particular interest in neurodevelopmental outcomes. Dr. Mahle is committed to research in the field of pediatric cardiology and congenital heart disease. He serves on several national committees including National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), Pediatric Heart Network (PHN), American Heart Association’s Cardiovascular Disease in the Young (CVDY), and United Network Organ Sharing (UNOS). Dr. Mahle graduated from Yale University, attended medical school at the University of Maryland and completed his pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Following his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1999, he did an advanced fellowship in non-invasive imaging. In 2001, he joined the pediatric cardiology team at Emory University School of Medicine. In 2013, he was awarded the Marcus Professor in Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Mahle is the Medical Director of the Heart Transplant and Heart Failure Service at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He is Vice Chair on the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) Pediatric Committee, Chair on the American Heart Association Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young, and on the Executive committee of the American Academy of Pediatric Section on Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (SOCCS).

Research & Publications

Functional outcome and long-term sequelae of congenital heart surgery, with particular attention on neurodevelopmental outcomes in intermediate-term survivors of heart surgery. Additionally, Dr. Mahle has been invovled in various projects that have investigated myocardial and endothelial abnormalities in patients with palliated congenital heart defects.
