Edwin Smith, MD, FACS, FAAP, Surgeon-in-Chief
Edwin Smith MD, FACS, FAAP serves as Surgeon-in-Chief for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. In this role, Dr. Smith leads all surgical divisions and operative services across the Children’s system. In partnership with the Pediatrician-in-Chief, he is responsible for Children’s clinical, research, and teaching programs.
Dr. Smith has been a practicing pediatric urologist at Children’s since 1996. He is a graduate of Davidson College and received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine, where he also completed his general surgery internship and urology residency. He was honored as the first recipient of the William H. Cooner Award for compassion and excellence in patient care during his residency. After completing a two-year fellowship in pediatric urology at Emory University and Children’s, he joined the clinical faculty of Emory where he remains actively involved in teaching. He served for 16 years as the Program Director for the Emory Fellowship Program in Pediatric Urology and has been awarded the Emory Urology Resident Teaching Award.
He is a member of the Pelvic and Anorectal Care Clinic (PARC) and the Spina Bifida Clinic. Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has been deeply involved in the medical and academic leadership of Children's, having served in various capacities, including as past President of the Professional Staff and Director of Operative Services. He serves on the Children’s Board of Trustees and is a board member of the 1998 Society.
Dr. Smith's clinical interests focus on complex pediatric genitourinary reconstructive surgery. His contributions to research are noteworthy, with a portfolio of over 75 published articles and book chapters in scientific fields. Dr. Smith is also committed to global health, leading a pediatric urology medical mission to El Salvador annually for over 20 years. He enjoys time with his family, hiking and travel.
